Intrawest's relationship with Mammoth Mountain Ski Area became public knowledge in 1996, when it was announced that Intrawest had purchased a 33% partnership for Mammoth and June Lake ski operations, and all of the developable real estate owned by the Ski Area. In 1998, Intrawest increased their interest to 58%, and development has been progressing in giant leaps since.

Intrawest Corp. owns ten mountain resorts, including Whistler/Blackcomb in British Columbia, rated #1 in North America. The company also owns several other resort properties not related to skiing, and Alpine Helicopters, Ltd, purveyors of heli-skiing activities. So, it is not a far reach to see that Mammoth Mountain and the town of Mammoth Lakes fit right into Intrawest's resort development strategies. Intrawest is the leader in developing and operating village-centered resorts across North America, and the demand for these types of complete resort experiences continues to grow.

The development properties of Project Sierra encompass three "neighborhoods" within the resort corridor, occupying 240 acres and taking 10 years from start to finish. These neighborhoods are Juniper Springs, Sierra Star, and The Village at Mammoth. Each of the three neighborhoods has something unique to offer residents and visitors alike.

Juniper Springs, the neighborhood at the foot of Mammoth Mountain's eastern slope, consists of 4 properties:

1) Juniper Springs Lodge, the first of Intrawest's Mammoth projects, consisting of 174 studio, one, two and three bedroom suites fully furnished, and with the amenities and services of a hotel, including meeting rooms and banquet facilities.

2) Sunstone, with 77 one, two and three bedroom furnished units, and complete amenities, sits just upslope from JSL.

3) Eagle Run, with just 36 units, is upslope from Sunstone. It has only two and three bedroom condominiums.

4) Juniper Crest, currently under construction, will consist of 28 spacious three- bedroom luxury townhomes, with spectacular views of the Sherwin Range.

All of the Juniper Springs neighborhood homes offer easy access to the new Eagle Express chairlift and Little Eagle Lodge. Access to all of these is from the top of Meridian Blvd.

The next neighborhood also accessed via Meridian Blvd. and a bit closer to town, is called Sierra Star. It features an 18-hole golf course, and consists of 4 unique developments.

1) Mammoth Green consists of 46 two and three bedroom condos overlooking the golf course. Have you ever wanted to "golf-in, golf-out"?

2) Crooked Pines is a project of 10 individual homesites of one quarter to almost one half acre along the 4th fairway, golfing encouraged.

3) The Timbers, an award-winning development of 32 three-bedroom plus den and two-car garage attached homes is located on the 17th and 18th greens. Can you say "fore"?

4) The Cabins at Crooked Pines, also located along the 4th fairway, will consist of 4 buildings, 3-stories tall, 6 units each, and 4 different floor plans. 2-bedroom units will occupy the ground floor with 3-bedroom units on the upper floors. The plan here is to leave as much of the surrounding forest intact as is possible, to increase the feeling of seclusion. Stargazing from the spa might be mandatory!

And finally, we come to the last but not least of the Intrawest Mammoth neighborhoods. This is called The Village at Mammoth. The village concept is one that Intrawest has perfected in most of their ski resort developments, and is focused on the idea of having everything in one central location. Drive in, park the car in the underground structure, and don't drive again until you are ready to leave.

The Village at Mammoth is designed in many levels, and combines shops and restaurants on the main levels with condominium homes above. Many of these shops and restaurants are open already and have impressed locals and visitors alike. The Village at Mammoth is located off Minaret Road, and is encircled by Canyon Boulevard. on the south, Hillside Drive on the west, and Forest Trail on the North. There is a ski-back trail in the works which will cross over Forest Trail. The homes in this neighborhood are:

1) Lincoln House consisting of 77 one, two and three bedroom fully furnished condos closest to the new gondola at one end of The Village plaza, overlooking that end of the Village Plaza, Canyon Boulevard, and the Village pond and pool.

2) White Mountain Lodge which has 89 condominiums sized one to three bedrooms overlooking Minaret Road and the Clocktower Square.

3) Grand Sierra Lodge, totaling 110 condominiums, and is being constructed in two phases, and is the newest of the Village home groups. Phase I is under construction at present (November 2003) and will be ready for occupancy in 2004. It will have a restaurant on the lower level, plus conference facilities, a media room, and a game room for the younger set. It is 5 stories tall, and will have one, two and three bedroom units. Phase II, which began construction in Spring of 2004, and will be ready for occupancy in February of 2005, will have no commercial facilities, will be 4 stories high, and also will have one, two and three bedroom units. Both phases overlook the pond and pool areas, and either Hillside Drive, Forest Trail or Clocktower Square.

There is no question that Intrawest is developing quality housing here in Mammoth. Their village concept has proved successful wherever implemented. Many of the design elements used in the Mammoth projects are Arts and Crafts, (think Greene & Greene and "craftsman-style" architecture) incorporating rock and timber exteriors, with granite countertops, slate and wood floors, stone and slate hearths, and natural-looking earth tones in paint, carpet, wallpaper and furnishings for the interior décor. All come with the latest and greatest in appliances, fabrics and furniture, and some places even have heated walkways! There are pools, spas, sports lockers for your gear, 4-season fun for your family and friends, plus convenient shopping, skiing, biking and golfing. Oh, and let's not forget dining.

Coming Soon: 4 Timbers Units, The Cabins II at Fairway 16 in the Sierra Star neighborhood, Juniper Crest II in the Juniper Springs neighborhood, and a new residence/hotel named The Monache branded by a major hotel group in The Village at Mammoth neighborhood.
