Winterizing Your Home

The winter season is upon us, so now is a great time to address winter maintenance before the weather makes even the simplest of repairs significantly more difficult. Winterizing your home in advance of the changing seasons ensures that you aren’t having to make any repairs during the winter months or having to suffer without necessary conveniences.

Furnace Inspection and Routine Maintenance

Several routine maintenance tasks can be performed on your furnace by you, the homeowner. Such tasks include changing the air filter and making sure any flammable objects have been removed from around the furnace unit itself. You can also go around the house, ensuring that all of the vents are unobstructed from furniture, clutter, etc. Air needs to be able to circulate efficiently throughout your home. For the next steps in warranting your furnace is safe and in its best operating condition, you must call on a professional. A certified and licensed heating expert will assess the unit’s blower belt and motor, assuring that they do not need any repair before taking on the winter months. All are preventative measures taken to avoid fire and alleviate the opportunity for poisonous gases to enter your home. Hiring a licensed heating professional is pivotal in the assurance that your furnace is safe and sound working order before entering the winter months.

Addressing Your Windows and Doors

Begin by checking all of the weather stripping around your windows and doors for any signs of air leaks or drafts. Replace any stripping that has been pulled loose or is showing signs of wear. Even the smallest of crevices creates a passage for cold air to enter or warm air to escape. Finally, inspect the actual glass of the windows and doors for cracks or breaks. If necessary, replace the glass. Winter’s cold air drafts entering your home leads to money exiting your wallet.

Fireplace and Chimney Preparation

A cheap chimney sweep fireplace cleaning professional can be found in cities nationwide. The chimney professional will clean out your fireplace and chimney of any creosote and soot build-up. Creosote can catch fire from the sparks flying upward while burning. The mortar in the bricks surrounding the chimney will also be closely inspected for cracks or holes. If found, these cracks and holes must be repaired by a professional bricklayer, as they too can be a source of fire.

Exterior Detail

Inspect your roof for loose or missing shingles. Replace or repair as needed to prevent water leaks when the freezing rain or snow begins to melt. Clear gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris, and inspect that they are fastened securely to the house. Be sure the downspouts extend at least five feet away from the home to inhibit ponding around the foundation. Lastly, close all vents and openings around the foundation, or crawl, to keep unwanted intruders from finding refuge for the winter.

Congratulations! Your home has now been winterized. Taking preventative action in the fall is your best line of defense against winter. Winter Home Maintenance

No matter where you live, you are starting to see signs of winter and cooler temperatures that accompany the cooler months. As winter progresses, you are more likely to begin seeing snow and ice storms pop up and these events can cause damage to your home depending on the severity of them as well as if you prepare ahead of time and clean up after a storm. A little time and effort on your part can help protect your home and help you avoid costly repairs in the spring.

Snow accumulation on your roof can be a problem. Snow is heavy and can cause damage to your roof if allowed to build up. You can remove snow from your roof with special tools but be careful. These tools can damage your roof if not used correctly. Unless you have experience getting snow off of your roof, it’s probably better to call a roofing expert for help.

You also need to watch for ice buildup on your roof. The top part of your roof can warm up during the day and melt any accumulated snow. As water drains down to the cooler part of your roof, it can re-freeze into ice. Accumulated ice can force water into your attic and down your interior walls, causing damage. Excess ice buildup on your roof should be removed by a trained roofing professional.

While you’re checking your roof, check your gutters for debris. Blocked gutters can be damaged by freezing water and can allow melted ice and snow to penetrate your home causing extensive damage. After each snow, clear away any accumulation from doors and windows to decrease the chances of melting snow leaking through small openings and causing damage to your home.

Protect any exposed pipes in your attic, crawl space, or outside your home. If pipes are not well insulated, water inside can freeze and cause them to burst. There are insulating items you can buy to protect your pipes, but they will not take the place of daily prevention.

Finally, keep your home warm by taking care of your furnace. It is important to change your furnace filter every 30 days so it will run more efficiently and will last. Five Ways to Make Your Home Feel Cozier This WinterWinter is here and with that will come cold days that make you want to stay inside to escape the bitter temperatures. It isn’t possible to stay inside all the time but when you do, these five tips will help you feel cozy even on the dreariest days.

  1. Use your fireplace. If your home doesn’t have a fireplace, consider adding a standalone variety with a built-in electric heater in the room you use most. A space heater can add warmth where you need it and allow you to keep your thermostat lower than you normally would saving you money while adding a pretty fire to sit by in your home. The advantage of a space heater is that you only run it when you are in that room, so it isn’t running all of the time.
  2. Add blankets to the couch, chairs and beds in your home. Nothing feels better than wrapping up in a warm blanket on a cold day. Consider purchasing slippers for the members of your family as well if you don’t have them already. If you don’t wear shoes when you are at home, slippers or socks will keep your feet warm especially if you have hardwoods or tile in parts of your home.
  3. If most of your home isn’t carpeted, consider adding extra rugs for winter. Nothing is worse than cold tile on your feet during an overnight bathroom trip. Adding rugs to frequently used parts of your home can make your home much cozier during the cooler months.
  4. Open the blinds and curtains during daylight hours. While there are fewer hours of sunlight each day, let the sun you can into your home. The sun will add a lot of warmth and natural light and a much better atmosphere compared to artificial lighting.
  5. Fill the crockpot with ingredients for a warm stew or let a pot of soup simmer on the stove all afternoon. Not only will you have a hearty dinner at the end of the day, you will enjoy the aroma from the food as it cooks throughout the day.

Decrease Your Utility Costs this WinterAs we enter the coldest part of the winter, utility bills will start to increase as your heat is running more to keep your comfortable in your home. There are many things you can do to save on your utility bills without sacrificing too much comfort. Here are some great tips to keep you warm and your utility bills low.

  • Open your shades and curtains during the warmer parts of the day to allow sunlight inside to warm up your home.
  • Use ceiling fans to help circulate the warm air throughout your home and push it into the lower parts of your rooms from since heat naturally rises. Fans should turn clockwise in the winter on the lowest setting.
  • Modern electronics draw energy even when turned off. Keep devices, small appliances and chargers unplugged when they are not being used.
  • Energy efficient light bulbs will use less energy and last longer.
  • Set your heat about five degrees cooler than normal and wear a sweater or use a blanket when you are at home. Drop the thermostat by another five degrees when you are away from home. A programmable thermostat will make this easy or you can adjust manually.
  • Line dry your laundry if possible and use the cold-water cycle when washing. When using the dryer, make sure it is full and the lint trap has been cleaned with each use so it will work more efficiently.
  • Take shorter showers if possible. It costs a lot of money to heat the water you use during the winter.
  • Washing dishes by hand uses more water than a dishwasher. Use the dishwasher whenever you can but only with full loads and allow the dishes to air dry for further savings.
  • Microwaves typically use a third of the energy that the stove will use to cook the same food. This can really add up over a month.
  • When you use the oven, open the door when you are finished cooking with the oven and allow the heat to escape into your home. Be careful when doing this if you have small children.
  • Keep the refrigerator full. More cold items means your fridge doesn’t need to work as hard after the door is opened and it begins to warm up.
  • Switch out your cool cotton sheets for flannel or a knit variety to keep you warmer at night.
  • Add a blanket under your comforter or bedspread for greater warmth.
  • Keep your filters clean and change them regularly per the manufacturer’s recommendations for greatest efficiency.
  • Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and baths only as needed during the winter. They eliminate the warmest air from your home.

A little effort on your part can make a big difference in your electric bill so take the time to make these adjustments and you should see a difference when your bills arrive.
